REDcert System
The REDcert system was established at the beginning of 2010 in Germany by leading associations and organizations from the agricultural and fuel sectors. In the same year, the REDcert certification system was recognized by the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (Bundesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung – BLE), by decision dated 24 July 2012.
REDcert Certification
REDcert-EU and REDcert² are certification systems supported by organizations. Their development was a response to the growing demand for certification in the fields of sustainable development and environmental protection. These certification systems are currently the most widely recognized standards across the entire EU.
REDcert-EU is a standard for the sustainable use of biomass and biofuels. REDcert² is applied particularly in cases of sustainable use of agricultural raw materials in the food and feed industries, as well as for the material use of biomass in the chemical industry.
Certification provides companies from these sectors with easier access to the European biofuels market and the associated subsidies.
Who is the REDcert system intended for?
The REDcert system is a certification system for biomass and biofuels production, intended for entities at every level involved in the production of biomass and biofuels, including, among others:
- farms producing biomass (from agricultural raw materials),
- various producers of biomass and biofuels,
- producers of electricity generated from biomass and biofuels,
- purchasers of biomass (acquired for further processing),
- suppliers of inputs, biofuels, and biomass,
- distributors.
What benefits does the implementation and certification of the REDcert system provide?
- Reduction of the environmental impact of activities, including through the limitation of greenhouse gas emissions, protection of the biosphere, and sustainable land use;
- Respect for human rights and labor rights;
- Management of biomass and biofuels production in accordance with international standards;
- Fulfillment of sustainable development criteria and the requirements of Directive 2009/28/EC (RED);
- Increased competitiveness in the biofuels and biomass market;
- Building trust among local communities in responsible production;
- Improvement of the company’s image domestically and internationally.
